Photography Safari

See the Mara differently.

A small-group photographic journey through Kenya’s Maasai Mara, hosted by wildlife photographer Shilen Haria.

Designed for beginner to intermediate photographers who want more time at sightings, better positioning and practical guidance in the field.

Why photograph the Mara?

The Mara was made for photography

From a photographer’s perspective, the Mara is light before it is landscape.

Dawn arrives softly across the plains, acacia trees break the horizon, dust catches the evening sun and wildlife moves through wide, uncluttered spaces. The openness of the landscape creates room to observe, anticipate and compose deliberately.

Unlike places where sightings can feel rushed or crowded, the Mara rewards patience.

Light

Soft dawns, warm evening light, dramatic skies and changing conditions create variety throughout the day.

Space

Open plains and clean sightlines make it easier to create environmental images rather than simply tight wildlife portraits.

Behaviour

The Mara’s wildlife density creates constant opportunities to observe natural behaviour, movement and interaction.

A large elephant standing in a green grassy field with a bird perched on its back, with a distant landscape and blue sky in the background.
A lioness lying on her back in a grassy field with her paws in the air, and a dried tree trunk in the background.

Hosted by Shilen

Raised in Kenya, Shilen grew up exploring its national parks and game reserves, developing a deep familiarity with the landscapes, wildlife and rhythms of East Africa.

Over decades of observation and photography, he has developed an instinctive understanding of animal behaviour, light and movement.

His approach is patient, practical and grounded in respect for wildlife. Rather than simply telling guests which camera settings to use, Shilen helps them understand what they are seeing, what may happen next and how to position themselves to capture it.

A Photographic Focus

More time. Better positioning. Stronger images.

The Peponi Photography Safari is not about rushing from sighting to sighting.

We stay, watch and read the landscape — giving you time to anticipate behaviour, understand light and make better photographic decisions in the field.

Shilen provides practical guidance throughout the journey, helping guests improve both their technical approach and visual storytelling.

Anticipate behaviour

Learn to read body language, movement and animal behaviour so you can prepare before the moment happens.

Work with natural light

Understand how changing light affects mood, exposure and composition throughout the day.

Strengthen composition

Build cleaner, more intentional frames using space, perspective and environmental context.

Photograph movement

Develop confidence in fast-moving situations and changing wildlife behaviour.

Tell stronger stories

Move beyond individual portraits and create images that show place, behaviour and atmosphere.

Learn in the field

Receive practical, real-time feedback from Shilen while you shoot.

A day behind the lens

Before sunrise: Head into the Mara as the first light begins to change the landscape.

Stay with the sighting: When something special is unfolding, there is time to wait, observe and photograph it properly.

Midday reset: Return to camp to review images, rest, recharge batteries and discuss what worked.

Golden hour: Head back out as the light softens and wildlife becomes active again.

Review and refine: Use the day’s images to understand what worked and what you can improve tomorrow.
