General Safari Questions

We are founder-led and we will personally host you for the duration of this trip. From first conversation to final game drive, you deal directly with the people behind the safari. We prioritise time, quality, and presence over volume tourism.

Transport to and from Nairobi airport (JKIA), transport to and from the Maasai Mara lodge, accomodation for the duration of the trip (3 nights in Nairobi on a bed and breakfast basis and 4 nights in the Maasai Mara on a full board basis), all game drives and park fees.

Groups are limited to a maximum of six guests per vehicle and 14 guests in the lodge to ensure space, flexibility, and a personal experience.

The Masai Mara is home to the Big Five - lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino. In addition you will see cheetah, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, crocodile and a host of other african game together with abundant birdlife. Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, but the Mara offers some of the most consistent viewing in Africa.

Yes. All Masai Mara park fees (including peak season rates) are included.

No. For maximum flexibility, guests arrange their own flights to and from Nairobi. Peponi Safaris can provide assistance and guidance if required.

Yes. Photographic guidance is optional and never intrusive. The safari is designed to be immersive and rewarding for all guests.

The Nairobi - Maasai Mara - Nairobi itinerary is fixed and cannot be varied. If guests want to see other parts of Kenya (or East Africa) subsequent to the Maasai Mara trip, this can be arranged by Peponi Safaris at the travelling party’s own expense. Talk to us about this and we will be able to tailor something suitable.

There are optional extras available for purchase through Peponi Safaris such as dawn hot air balloon safari, Masaai cultural village visits, bush walking safaris to better understand the flora and fauna of the land, bush meals and sundowners, night game drives. You can talk to us to discuss these.

The accomodation in Nairobi is on a bed and breakfast basis. There are many resaturants available witin walking distance of the Nairobi hotel and ride share cars are plentiful and reasonably priced. All meals and snacks including soft drinks are included as part of the Maasai Mara lodge accomodation.

Early mornings and evenings can become quite cold in Nairobi and the Mara. Plan on packing comfortable lightweight and breathable layers, ideally in neutral beige or knaki/green tones (avoid white, black, dark blues and bright colours and any camouflage prints). Essential items include long trousers (zip-offs are useful and long sleeved shirts for sun and insect protection, warm fleece and windproof jacket for the chilly mornings and evenings, a sun hat, longer than ankle length socks, comfortable but sturdy boots/shoes, sunglasses, insect repellant and sunscreen. There is no need for formal wear at the lodge. Consider bringing a neck scarf or bandana for the cold or sun protection.

Australian citizens visiting Kenya for tourism or business must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) online before travel. Required documents include a passport with 6 months validity, return flight details, and proof of accommodation. The eTA allows single entry and must be applied for at etakenya.go.ke.

There are no universal mandatory vaccinations for travellers arriving directly from Australia.
NOTE: A Yellow Fever certificate is usually not required for entry, but is strongly recommended by health authorities. Medical advice should be sought several weeks prior to departure. -
Yes. Guests should consult a medical professional regarding prophylaxis. Protective clothing and insect repellent are strongly recommended.

The Kenya Shilling is the currency in use and useful for small purchases and tips. US dollars (post-2009 series) are widely accepted and can be exchaged at reputable Forex Bureaus in major cities and towns in Kenya. Major hotels and our lodge will accept credit cards.

Kenya uses UK-style Type G plugs.

The mobile signal is surprisingly good in the Mara and obviously in Nairobi. You can purcahse an international sim from Australia or locally from Kenya upon landing and then your mobile phone should work. Peponi Safaris can provide assistance if necessary.
Alternatively, you can disconnect from the world and enjoy some time away from your device!
Photography-Specific Questions

Time. We prioritise early and late light, patient positioning, and unhurried game drives. Rather than rushing between sightings, we allow moments to unfold, which is often when the strongest images are created.

One or two DSLR or mirrorless camera bodies, at least a 100-400mm or longer lens, together with a medium 70-100mm and a shorter 24-70mm lens are recommended. Also pack spare batteries and a charger, storage (SD cards or equivalent and an external drive), lens and camera cleaning kit and a camera bag (within airline carry-on specifications). A detailed gear guide is available upon request and prior to departure. Tripods should be avoided and bean bags will be provided..

Yes. Midday breaks provide time to review and edit images. Informal image critique sessions may be offered during the safari in a relaxed, supportive environment.

Yes. Groups are limited to less than six guests per vehicle to ensure clear sightlines and adequate space for photography.

Wildlife distances vary. Longer focal lengths increase flexibility. Part of wildlife photography is patience and working with what nature presents. Ethical wildlife viewing is always prioritised over pushing closer.
